What is reiki?
Reiki is now used in the west to describe a form of alternative medicine developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui which uses ‘palm healing’ or hands-on-healing to channel the energy into people for the purpose of promoting physical and emotional well-being.
The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” In Japan, Reiki is called “Usui Shiki Ryoho”.
Reiki practitioners use ki (life force) as an unseen but powerful energy source that permeates all life. By using special hand positions, they can activate any life force for several purposes such as healing, rejuvenating, protecting and balancing mind, spirit and body. It gives its users abilities beyond those of regular humans, such as increased strength, speed and durability.
How to become a reiki master?
A person can become a certified reiki master by learning through a class or through self study. A Reiki master, once certified, is able to initiate others into Reiki by a 3-day or 5-day course which includes lectures and hands on healing. The practitioner will create a connection with the energy of the universe and allow this energy to flow from their hands directly onto the body of a person who could be sitting for feet away.
Can a person be a Christian and use reiki?
Yes. Reiki is unconditional love and does not have a religion or spiritual affiliation.
Because of its ability to address many issues, reiki is sometimes referred to as a laying on of hands type of complementary alternative healing practice. It can be used alone or in conjunction with any other form of medicine being used by clients such as conventional medicine, herbs or supplements. Reiki is similar to “the laying on of hands” as mentioned of in the Bible.
What is the “laying on of hands”?
The laying on of hands is a healing technique used by many cultures which involves placing one’s hands upon or above another person, with the intent to heal their ailments. This practice is found in many ancient cultures, including Greek and Jewish traditions.
The Christian tradition refers to “laying on of hands” as a spiritual practice mentioned several times in the Bible. Some passages refer to this practice as an act of blessing others while other passages describe it as an act for engaging in magic. There are some specific instances where individuals are described as being healed through this gesture, but more often it is simply referred to without specifics of what role it might have played in healing someone who was ill.
Can reiki heal someone physically?
In terms of physical healing, people have had the ability to fully recover from life-threatening illness such as cancer and heart disease after traditional methods have been exhausted. In some instances even fresh surgical wounds heal faster and without infection, where others using traditional medical practices are quite slow in their recovery times if they experience no infection setting in. People who receive this kind of physical healing often become more connected to their spiritual life.
