Every human being carries an angelic nature and a demon nature at the same time, and that combination is exactly what makes us human rather than animal or angel. However, the church spent centuries insisting on one extreme, while the modern spirituality movement now insists on the other. Both sell you half a person.

What Is Original Sin?

Original sin answers the question of whether we are born good or evil with a single word: evil. Every person arrives already guilty, already depraved, already condemned before doing anything at all. Therefore the doctrine tells a child that they amount to a completely sinful, unworthy being whose only hope lies in accepting Christ and escaping hell.

Many now view teaching this to children as a form of psychological abuse, and the objection is not sentimental. Rather, it is that the doctrine ignores the complex reality of human existence and the presence of our higher selves entirely.

Humans do possess a lower, animalistic nature. That much holds true, and no honest person denies it. However, defining a child strictly through the lens of utter depravity does deep damage, because it leaves them carrying guilt and blind to the beautiful, heavenly spirit they also hold within them.

What Does The Bible Say About Original Sin?

Scripture never settles whether we are born good or evil, because it emphasizes a division between our competing natures instead of a uniform state of depravity. It describes the word of God as sharper than any two-edged sword, able to divide between bone and marrow, and that dividing action is the whole point.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Notice what the sword divides. Soul from spirit. In this context the soul aligns with the lower, animalistic or devil nature, while the spirit aligns with the heavenly nature that comes from the true Father. Therefore the biblical mandate is not merely to rescue a completely depraved creature from hell. Instead it is to initiate a radical transformation in which you separate those two natures.

Christ’s purpose is to help us perform that separation. The dark side within us must be addressed, managed and made obedient to the word of God, rather than viewed solely as an inescapable curse we inherited and can never touch.

What Is Original Perfection?

In response to that heavy burden, a modern movement emerged teaching original perfection. It answers whether we are born good or evil with the opposite single word: good. You are fine just as you are, you arrived perfect, and nothing about you needs correcting. Consequently it became the default spirituality of a generation that the opposite extreme had wounded.

Yet this concept is also a flawed extreme. Humans carry an amazing angelic nature, but we remain undeniably flawed and hold deep hang-ups. Treating human beings as entirely flawless from birth ignores the darker realities of our nature, and it leads directly to entitlement.

The evidence is not hard to find. For example, nobody teaches a child how to steal or how to sin, and some children exhibit genuinely disturbing behavior like intentionally hurting bugs or frogs. In other words, we are not blank slates of pure goodness. Believing only in original perfection therefore does a disservice, because it ignores the raw, lower nature every mortal carries.

What Does The Bible Say About Original Perfection?

The Bible does point to a higher, heavenly origin for humanity. We hold a spirit nature from above that connects us to the true Father, and it represents our inherent goodness and light. Nevertheless, Scripture does not support a stagnant state of original perfection any more than it supports total depravity.

The logic is hard to escape. If we arrived entirely perfect, the word of God would have no soul and spirit left to divide. Moreover, the scriptures call believers to make their lower nature obedient, which proves darkness is actively present and needs dealing with rather than affirming.

“No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

Paul is not describing a man born perfect. He is describing a man in a daily fight with something real.

Is Original Sin A Lie?

Not a lie. A half-truth, which serves its defenders better and damages its victims more. As an answer to whether we are born good or evil, it gets the first half right and then stops reading.

Original sin reports something anyone can verify by watching a toddler or watching the news. The lower nature exists, it requires no instruction, and it will run a life into the ground once it starts eating. So far the doctrine simply tells the truth.

The lie hides in the word only. When the doctrine moves from “you carry darkness” to “you are nothing but darkness,” it stops describing a human being and starts describing a caricature. As a result, people spend decades trying to repent their way out of a nature nobody ever told them they also had.

No, but we arrive with full access to it, and Scripture stays far more candid about that access than most preaching does. Anyone asking whether we are born good or evil has to reckon with how effortlessly the lower nature operates without training.

The late researcher Jordan Maxwell, who wrote the foreword to Spirit Realm, put the human situation as bluntly as anyone can put it.

“Each one of us is half animal, half spirit. You must choose daily between the two natures and force yourself to live in your ascended nature, not to be like the animals.”

Maxwell called the other half the Elohim nature: the part of us that understands beautiful music and poetry, designs lasers, creates motion pictures and builds rockets. That is the god part. Meanwhile the animal part can do everything we would rather not name, and it grows by eating. Feed it long enough and a person ends up like Charles Manson, so animalistic that nothing remains of what they started as.

Notice that this describes a trajectory, not an origin. Nobody starts as a Manson. Someone becomes one, daily, through a long series of choices about which nature gets fed.

Are Humans Created Good?

Yes, and the text says so before it says anything else about us.

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

Genesis 1:27, 31 (NIV)

That verdict lands on humanity before the fall, before the fruit, before anyone breaks a single commandment. Above all, it is God’s own assessment rather than a compliment we paid ourselves. Any doctrine that cannot hold Genesis 1:31 and Romans 3:23 in the same hand is not describing the Bible. It is describing one half of it.

So both answers hold, and that duality is the entire point. The image of God is in there. The animal is in there too. Consequently the spiritual life is not about discovering whether you were born good or evil. It is about learning which one you feed.

Life Is Not Black And White

Here the whole question of whether we are born good or evil finally comes apart, because the binary itself is an import. It is not how Scripture reasons.

The sovereignty of God shows us that everything works together for a purpose: the good, the bad, and everything in between. Many who miss this land in Gnosticism, concluding that the God of the Old Testament must be a totally different entity from the God of the New. Yet that conclusion stems from a lack of understanding of God’s complexity and dualistic nature, not from any genuine contradiction in the text.

Because if you want to know where the darkness in a person comes from, Scripture answers in a way most sermons quietly skip.

This is a hard pill to swallow when we have heard all our lives that the devil created evil in the world. Still, the verse says what it says, and it reframes whether we are born good or evil completely. If God forms both, then the darkness in you is not an infection you caught. It is the contrast that lets the light in you show.

If God Creates Darkness, Who Is Satan?

Not the author of evil, and not God’s rival. The word satan means adversary, or opponent of that which is good. It names a function before it names a person.

In Job 1:6 the sons of God present themselves before the Lord, and Satan comes among them. He is in the room, reporting in. Furthermore he must seek permission before he acts on the earth, which is not how anyone describes an equal.

Just as we play many biblical archetypes across a life, we can also play the role of a satan. In fact Peter did, and Jesus said so to his face right after Peter tried to talk him out of the cross.

“Get behind me, Satan! You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

No demon had entered Peter. He was simply operating out of his lower nature while sincerely believing he was helping, which is precisely how that nature usually works. Consequently the adversary in your life very often turns out to be your own soul arguing for your comfort.

Even Paul received something like this on purpose. He describes a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan sent to buffet him so that he would not exalt himself above measure. In other words God permitted the adversary, and permitted it for Paul’s benefit. All spirits are here to teach.

How Sin Actually Works

If we arrived guilty, sin would be a status. Scripture instead describes it as a sequence, and that difference decides the whole question of whether we are born good or evil.

Read the verbs. Dragged away, enticed, conceived, gives birth, full-grown. That is a process with stages, and every stage has a door. Nobody in that passage arrives sinful. They get drawn, and then they linger, and then something gets conceived that was not there before.

This is why the wages of sin is death while the gift of God is eternal life (Romans 6:23). You earn wages. Nobody earns a gift. The language itself refuses the idea that anyone shows up pre-condemned.

How To Choose Between Your Two Natures

Because both natures are real, the work is not settling whether you were born good or evil. It is deciding, daily, which one eats.

Above all, refuse both flatteries. The doctrine that calls you only filth will keep you repenting for being alive. The doctrine that calls you already perfect will keep you entitled and unchanged. Meanwhile the truth is harder and far more dignifying: you are a spectrum, and you get a vote.
