What does the Bible say about Casting Lots?
Casting lots was a method used by the Jews of the Old Testament and by the Christian disciples to determine the will of God. Lots could be sticks with markings, stones with symbols, etc., which were thrown into a small area and then the result was interpreted.
“The Luck Of The Draw” Term
“The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD,”
(Prov. 16:33)
Cleromancy
Cleromancy is a form of sortition, casting of lots, in which an outcome is determined by means that normally would be considered random, such as the rolling of dice, but are sometimes believed to reveal the will of God, or other supernatural entities.
The sailors on Jonahs Ship also cast lots to see who had brought evil upon their ship..
Jonah 1
7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
They used the casting of lots to find out who had brought evil upon their ship.
Was it demons?
The Bible never says that it is demons or evil spirits. The only difference is the intention. The casting of lots range in everything to drawing straws, flipping coins, readings cards, and even throwing dice and these were all known by the ancient prophets to be a way to determine the will of God.
Acts 1:26, “And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”
Another form of casting of lots that many children play is “Eenie Meenie Miney Mo.”
Casting lots causes contentions to cease, and keeps the mighty apart” (Proverbs 18:18)
Genesis 30
27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you.” 28 He added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.
Genesis 44:15
15 Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?”
THE KEY IS INTENTION!
Now there are many warnings throughout the Bible forbidding people to seek after those who consult with familiar spirits and fortune tellers. One of the main reasons is that many were lying about what they saw or even being able to see at all. We still see a great deal of this today. Why seek after a lesser spirit or entity when we have direct access to the greatest of them all? For there are many lying and seductive spirits masquerading in the athers waiting to make packs with humans to carry out their own evil desires. But on the other hand there are also beautiful spirits that interact directly with mankind as well. The problem is trying to consult them for information instead to going directly to God himself.
The Urim and the Thummim
The Urim and Thummin were believed to be two stones carried in a bag by the high priest specifically wearing the ephod breastplate. When it came time to make a decision or seek the answer of a yes or not question the high priest would reach into his bag and pull out one of the two stones to reveal what God would say about the matter.
Some Christian ministries are starting to embrace the ancient practice of the casting of lots and are seeing many breakthroughs with the use of these this practice. I myself use a deck or cards called the tarot of the most high in some of my personal sessions with clients. Some naysayers of these practices will say “well if you don’t need them why use them?” Again, God has given us many tools that we can use and by and means we don’t NEED any of them but they are for us to use if we so desire.
