For Jesus had said to him, ‘Come out of this man, you evil spirit!’ Then Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘My name is Legion,’ he replied, ‘for we are many.’
And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, ‘Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.’ He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and they told about the pigs as well. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.”

During His earthly ministry, Jesus could only be in one place at one time. That’s precisely why He said it was better for Him to go. He would send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, so His disciples could walk in that same measure of the Spirit. Now the Holy Spirit of Christ dwells in believers’ hearts. This territorial battle continues as the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. God’s love now permeates the earth through His children, carrying the light of love that sets captives free without restriction.
Carrying the Light of Christ Everywhere
As Christ did this on earth in one geographic location at a time, believers now carry the light of Christ with them everywhere. Wherever light enters, darkness flees. Jesus says in John 8:12 that He is the light of the world. He then tells us in Matthew 5:14 that we are the light of the world too. The light of Christ dwells in our hearts and permeates the depths of darkness as we live in the reality of “Christ in me, the hope of glory.”

Knowing Your Identity in Christ
Standing firm in the face of demonic adversity, whether around an individual or within a culture, rests entirely on knowing your identity. You have to know who you are in Christ, and who He is in you. Without that, the world will dictate who you are. Otherwise, you’ll take on the persona of a chameleon, adapting to every social ideology and way of thinking around you.
There’s a beautiful grace in becoming all things to all people, but within that grace, your true identity remains intact. It doesn’t get lost in a “go with the flow” mentality. Your standards and your truth stay in place; they don’t bend to compromise for the sake of convenience. This has been a learning curve for many believers, because righteous representations of it are still few and far between. Much of it has to be learned through experience.
